As parents, we do what we can to make this world a safer place for our kids. We protect them from physical harm, and we try to make them feel safe in unfamiliar situations. I’m not talking about coddling. We’re not doing our kids any favors by teaching them that there’s nothing mommy and daddy can’t fix. But we do have a primal instinct to love them and keep them safe.

Since our divorce, my ex-wife and I have worked at establishing and maintaining a strong co-parenting relationship. We still have a lot to learn, but we’re doing really well considering we have to find a way to share something so precious to each of us. Her husband and my fiancee are also on board with the whole family ecosystem thing, meaning we all want to do what’s best for everyone involved; not just the parents, and not just the kids.
